Valela

The immigration story of Salvatore and Filomena Valela is one of hardwork, sacrifice and love. After marrying on New Years Eve of 1950 in Simbario, Vibo Valentia, Salvatore and Filomena knew they wanted a better life for themselves and their future children.

Salvatore immigrated to Canada in 1951 and worked as a lumberjack in Valdor and Chibougamau in Northern Quebec, and later worked in the mines in Chicoutimi. Though he only made 90 cents an hour, Salvatore saved and sent money back to Filomena and their daughter who were still in Simbario. In 1957, Filomena and their eldest daughter immigrated to Canada and lived in Elliot Lake before making their final move to Toronto.

After suffering an injury from working Construction, Salvatore opened up a Pool Hall at Dufferin and College. 15 years later in the early 1980s, Salvatore opened up the beloved Sammy’s Place at Ossington and Dundas; a 14th Division favorite. This Pool Hall was a symbol of Salvatore and Filomena’s unprecedented work ethic. While Salvatore worked long days and nights at the Pool Hall, Filomena worked early mornings while also raising their 6 children. Although no longer with us, the legacy of Salvatore and Filomena Valela’s hard work, sacrifice and love lives on through their children and grandchildren.
